Brave little SHONA fem puppy was hit by a taxi, received no veterinary treatment and her owners stopped feeding her

SHONA IS A BRAVE FOUR MONTH OLD FEMALE PUPPY, WHO WAS HIT BY A TAXI IN AN INFORMAL SETTLEMENT THREE WEEKS AGO.  HER OWNERS STOPPED FEEDING HER AND SHONA WAS IN SUCH PAIN THAT SHE CHEWED OFF HER DAMAGED LEG. SHE WAS RESCUED BY ADOPT-A-PET ON 20TH MAY 2011 AND RUSHED TO THE VETS WHO  HAVE BEEN HELPING US SINCE 1994.  SHE IS GENTLE AND SWEET AND EVEN MANAGES TO WAG HER TAIL. SHE IS HAVING AN OPERATION ON 23RD MAY AND THEREAFTER THE VETS SAY THAT SHE WILL MAKE A FULL RECOVERY. DOGS MANAGE WELL ON THREE LEGS AND WE ARE HOPING THAT A SPECIAL OWNER WILL COME FORWARD TO ADOPT HER. SHE WILL BE MEDIUM SIZED AS AN ADULT.  OUR CONCERN IS ABOUT THE DESENSITIZATION TO SUFFERING OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SAW SHONA ON A DAILY BASIS AND DID NOTHING TO HELP HER, UNTIL ONE OF ADOPT-A-PET'S KENNEL ASSISTANTS INFORMED US OF HER PLIGHT.  IT IS A SHORT STEP WHEN ONE BECOMES DESENSITISED TO THE SUFFERING OF NON-HUMAN CREATURES, TO BECOME DESENSITISED TO THE SUFFERING OF ONE'S FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS. WITH THIS IN MIND ADOPT-A-PET IS CURRENTLY WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NICRO (THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CRIME PREVENTION AND THE REHABILITATION OF OFFENDERS) IN A PROJECT TO SENSITISE "YOUTH AT RISK" TO PROMOTE RESPECT FOR ALL LIFE.  WE ARE RUNNING A PROGRAMME PROMOTING POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES SUCH AS COMPASSION AND EMPATHY, WHETHER TO ANIMALS, BIRDS OR HUMANS NEEDING HELP. OUR AIM IS TO PROMOTE A GENTLER AND LESS VIOLENT SOCIETY.  PHOTOS OF SHONA CAN BE SEEN ON THIS WEBSITE UNDER "DOGS."  PHONE 021 465-4560 TO ADOPT SHONA.
